Narratives, Conceits & Imagery

Professional Screenwriter, Photographer and Closet Poet. Most days I delve in the collective insanity called Movie Making. On good days, I just hear voices, see and grieve a few deaths, spew venom, revel in pain, smear myself with the acrid smell of decay and vomit love and desire. On bad days, many me's kill each other off in a brutal bloodbath. This site is my doppelgänger, my sane side.

This is an attempt to try and find a Notan equivalent in photography, a medium which inherently is mimetic and representational at its core. I chose Washi paper negatives with just 2 stops of dynamic range. So effectively there are just 3 tones. Black, Grey and the White of the Paper. The images eschew lucidity but yet seek a certain sensory perception of the human emotion embodied in the poses and the play of light on the human shapes. When we strip an image of its excessive representational quality and deny the viewer their personal social constructs to engage with it, do we discover a new truth?

The Church, founded in 1888 was dedicated to the Annunciation. The church was built in the Romanesque style and the interior was decorated with paintings following the Beuron School. The Beuron school originated in the Benedictine monastery of Beuron in Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany). The style which aimed to purify and elevate religious art of the time, found inspiration in the art of ancient Egypt, Greece and Assyria.

The neo-Gothic Church of St Ludmila is one of the dominant features of the Vinohrady district. It was built according to designs by Josef Mocker from 1888 to 1892.
